Zombie mod has been part of Counter-Strike 1.6 for almost as long as the game itself, and it still fills servers. The rules are shamelessly simple: at the start of the round one player turns into a zombie and goes hunting. The humans shoot back and hold a position. Zombies have no guns at all — only melee — but every second there are more of them.
The first seconds are preparation: everyone is still human, free to buy weapons and pick a spot. Then a random player becomes patient zero and the chase begins. Everyone infected switches to the zombie side, so the horde snowballs.
The round ends one of two ways: the zombies infect everyone, or at least one human survives until time runs out. That is the whole human tactic in a nutshell — don't play hero alone, stack up somewhere with a single narrow entrance.
A zombie has more health, runs faster and jumps noticeably further than a human — it reaches places the living need a boost for. In exchange it carries no weapon and is easy to spot. Its hit knocks the victim back, which means concentrated fire genuinely pushes zombies away from a doorway — hence the classic picture: five humans in a corner and a wall of buckshot in front of the entrance.
Before turning you pick a class, from fast and fragile to slow tank. Sometimes, instead of a regular zombie, a Nemesis spawns: a health pool so large no single player can bring it down. Its counterpart is the Survivor — a human with a machine gun and enough health to hold off the horde alone.
Infections and kills pay out Ammo Packs, the currency inside the round. You spend them in the menu on special items: body armour, night vision, heavy weapons, upgrades for zombies. Ammo Packs live only in the current session — show up, earn, spend.
Zombie maps are dimmed: a silhouette down a dark corridor is not something you spot right away. Night vision is handed to humans for free and toggles with N; zombies can buy it too, since the dark is no friendlier to them. A server owner can switch normal lighting back on with a single checkbox.
Beyond Ammo Packs there is ZM Cash — a currency that stays on your account. It builds up as you play the mode and is spent in the shop on a separate skin collection: special forces operators, Umbrella mercenaries and a few models for the regular modes that cannot be bought any other way. Regular Cash is not earned in zombie mode at all — the two economies are kept apart on purpose.
Any rented server flips into zombie mode with one button in my servers: the map list changes and a dedicated set of options shows up — preparation time, classes, bosses, starting Ammo Packs. Your regular settings are not lost, and the server switches back whenever you want.
Pick a zombie server from the server list — and stay out of dark corners.
